MTN’s 4G Network is now live for everyone across Nigeria!

mtn-4g-lte-speedtests_4MTN’s 4G network, the lovechild of its Visafone acquisition is now live for everyone. The network has been live for a few months, but only to erstwhile Visafone users who migrated to MTN.

Starting this week, anyone on MTN with a compatible sim card and phone can access LTE network. Unlike those who migrated from Visafone, who are stuck with Visafone data plans, regular MTN users can use the regular MTN bundles and enjoy the burst of speed.

To check whether your current sim and phone is compatible, text “4G” to 131 and you will get a text telling you if either of both are compatible with the network. If your phone is though, but your sim card is not, you’ll have to do a sim swap to switch your line to a sim that’s 4G-ready. It is worth noting that the 4G -ready sims (they’re called “token sims”) cannot store phone numbers, just in case you’re still in the stone age and rely on the odd 200 numbers a SIM card can hold.

Since I first tried MTN’s 4G network, it seems to have gotten faster as well, with average speeds between 33Mbps and 15Mbps in my experience.

The internal communication announcing the availability, which we’ve seen, states in part that “inline with our efforts to deepen the growth and rollout of broadband across Nigeria, we are excited ti announce that MTN’s 4G service is now available in Lagos and Abuja (with other locations coming soon).”

While the communication specifically mentions just Lagos and Abuja, I can confirm that the service is actually available in most cities across the country. In fact, the tests above were taken outside Lagos and Abuja. If you do check it out, let us know how it pans out for you.
